Teesta Setalwad obtained relief from the Supreme Court and was allowed to travel to Malaysia

Social activist Deesta Setalwad has now got relief from the Supreme Court. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court allowed Teesta Setalwad to visit Selangor, Malaysia from August 31 to September 10. The purpose of the visit was to participate in a conference against racism. A bench comprising Justices PR Gavi and KV Viswanathan allowed Teesta to travel abroad with certain conditions. Setalwat has ordered to deposit 10 lakhs as security money. Apart from this, the bench also said that Teesta Setalwad was giving complete information about her journey. It has also been said that the passport will be submitted after the conference. Teesta Setalwad is currently out on bail. He has been accused of forging documents to implicate government officials in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots. Apart from this, he has also been accused of maligning the image of the state of Gujarat as part of the conspiracy. Relief in Supreme Court: In July this year, the Supreme Court granted relief to Teesta Setalwat, setting aside the Gujarat High Court's verdict in the case. At that time, the Supreme Court had told Teesta to hand over the passport as per the bail condition. During today's hearing, lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for Teesta Setalwad, told the court that Teesta's bail conditions should be relaxed to go to Malaysia. Referring to Zakir Naik, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta advised the court that if he (Teesta Setalwad) is allowed to go abroad, conditions should be imposed to ensure his return to India. He said, “Information regarding the purpose of Vijayam and the conference should be given. Your Lordship may impose conditions to ensure his return to attend the pending trial. We have serious apprehensions… Zakir Naik (a terrorist accused, fugitive in the eyes of Indian law) lives there, my lord. On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court heard a plea by Zakia Jafri, wife of Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was killed in the 2002 Gujarat riots. During the hearing, the court, which dismissed the petition, had made some harsh remarks against Teesta Setalwat. Teesta was arrested the next day.
