Power of sports should be used for social purposes: Yunus
Bangladesh's interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus on Saturday said the power of sports should be used for social purposes as was done during the Paris Olympics 2024. Paris 2024 and its partners have decided to make the Olympic and Paralympic Games a responsible competition in economic, social and environmental terms.
Nobel laureate Yunus said, “I have been encouraging the use of the power of sports for social purposes. I am glad that Paris Olympics 2024 has taken note of this. With Paris Olympics 2024, we have created a new concept of Olympics – Social Business Olympics.” Yunus (84 years) made these remarks while addressing the third 'Voice of Global South Summit' which India organized virtually.
Yunus was in Paris when the Sheikh Hasina-led government collapsed due to anti-government protests led by students in Dhaka. Yunus had to cut short his stay in Paris and return to Dhaka after an interim head of the new government was appointed in Bangladesh on August 8. “The Paris Olympics were designed as a social business Olympics. As the Global South, we can work together to unleash the social power of sports,” Yunus said.
