New Delhi:- Many political parties have demanded the Election Commission to increase the maximum expenditure limit in assembly elections. They said that elections have become expensive, it is difficult to fight elections with Rs 40 lakh. In such a situation, there is a need to increase the limit. Major political parties raised this demand before the Election Commission team that came to review the election preparations in Haryana. At present, in the country, candidates are allowed to spend a maximum of 95 lakh rupees in Lok Sabha elections and 40 lakh rupees in assembly elections.
The spending limit was increased two years ago
Two years ago, the Commission had increased the expenditure limit. During the assembly elections of five states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand in the year 2022, the Commission had increased the expenditure limit from Rs 28 lakh to Rs 40 lakh. In the elections of smaller states, the maximum limit is Rs 28 lakh.

It is believed that the commission can review this matter and take a decision before the Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand assembly elections to be held at the end of this year. The commission's team led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar met with representatives of BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, CPI (Marxist), Indian National Lok Dal, Jannayak Janata Party in Chandigarh on Tuesday and took their suggestions. The term of Haryana Assembly is ending on November 3, 2024. Out of 90 assembly seats in the state, 17 are reserved.

Political parties raised several demands before the Election Commission. These include free and fair elections by preventing misuse of government machinery, deployment of adequate central forces at sensitive polling stations, removal of names of dead and out-of-status voters from the voter list, and providing voter lists to candidates on time.
