Lemon Tree Hotels Chairman and Managing Director Patanjali Govind Keswani has given a big statement on Saturday regarding employment in India. He has said that the tourism department can play an important role in solving the problem of employment in the country.
Patanjali Govind Keswani has said that if the government supports the tourism sector in the right manner, then the challenge of increasing unemployment in the country can be overcome. The tourism sector has the potential to solve 50 percent of the employment challenge.
25 percent employment
Speaking at a programme at IIM Calcutta, he said India's tourism sector is on the verge of reaching a turning point. Keswani said the tourism sector contributes 15-20 per cent to the GDP of many countries and provides 25 per cent employment.
Huge potential for job creation
Expressing disappointment over the government's approach towards the tourism sector, he said, “In India, tourism contributes only 6.5 per cent of the GDP and almost the same to employment. There is a huge potential for job creation in this sector.”
Solution to up to 50 percent of employment challenges
Patanjali's Govind Keswani said, “If the government can effectively leverage this opportunity, it can solve up to 50 per cent of our employment challenges.” Discussing India's current economic scenario, Keswani said the country is at a critical juncture, just like China was during its rapid growth phase. He said household income in India is growing at 6-7 per cent annually, which could lead to a significant change in discretionary consumption trends.
