JPC Set to Examine Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, Owaisi, Imran Masood Among Key MPs on Committee
Waqf Amendment Bill 2024: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constituted a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, on Friday. The committee had 21 members from the Lower House and 10 from the Upper House for ensuring that whatever proposed legislation comes up is looked into from both sides in a non-partisan way. Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the bill on Thursday. This came amid stiff opposition from different parties over some provisions in the bill.
Composition of the JPC

The recently constituted JPC represents a mix of influential MPs from various parties. In all, 21 members in the Lok Sabha were appointed to the committee, which comprises Jagdambika Pal, Nishikant Dubey, Tejasvi Surya, Aparajita Sarangi, Sanjay Jaiswal, Dilip Saikia, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, DK Aruna, Gaurav Gogoi, Imran Masood, Mohammad Jawed, Maulana Mohibullah Nadvi, Kalyan Banerjee, A Raja, Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, Dileshwar Kamait, Arvind Sawant, Suresh Gopinath, Naresh Ganpat Mhaske, Arun Bharti, and Asaduddin Owaisi.
The names of the 10 members from the Rajya Sabha are yet to be decided and are likely to be recommended by the Rajya Sabha in due course of time. Notably, the JPC comprises some opposition stalwarts like AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress MP Imran Masood, thereby making the committee truly representative in all respects.
Objective and Scope of JPC
The JPC is to consider the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which is designed for making amendments in the existing legislation relating to Waqf properties. This committee will take up a very important role in addressing the sentiments of opposition parties since they had already registered their objections against certain provisions of the bill. The committee will interact with various stakeholders, take diverse opinions, and work towards refining the legislation in the light of Parliament’s and public interest.
Next Steps and Expectations
The JPC’s constitution is a big step toward examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in excruciating detail. It is the findings and recommendations that are expected to play a very seminal role in finalizing this bill, subject to voting in Parliament. This process is expected to enhance the legislative scrutiny and foster a more informed and balanced approach toward the proposed amendments.
