How is Modi Govt's new Waqf Bill beneficial for Muslims?
The Central Government tabled the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. While opposition parties opposed the bill, the government responded by explaining how the bill would benefit Muslims. Minority Affairs Minister Kiran Rijiju listed the benefits of the bill one by one in the House. This Bill will not interfere with the freedom of any religious organization… Forget taking away anyone's rights, this Bill is brought to give them. This bill has been brought to give rights to people who are not getting rights. The Union Minister also clarified that the entire Waqf income will be spent on Muslims only. He also said that the bill is based on the report of the Sachar Committee (which talked about reforms) formed by you (Congress). Union minister said opposition parties are misleading Muslims…Until last night, Muslim representatives came to me…Many MPs have told me that mafia has taken over the Waqf Board. Some MPs have said that they personally support the bill but cannot say so because of their political parties… We have had several levels of debate on this bill across the country. Kiran Rijiju said that 'Opposition parties are fighting for politics' and we want to inform Congress that the Waqf Act 1995 has not achieved its purpose and these amendments are being brought in to accomplish tasks that you cannot do. While a joint parliamentary committee had recommended a review of the Waqf Act 1995, the opposition has opposed it on political grounds. Kiran Rijiju added that the opposition parties are trying to create confusion about the purpose of the Waqf Amendment Bill. No law can be above the Constitution, but the Wakf Act, 1995 has some such provisions. 'Bill not anti-Muslim' At the same time, Janata Dal, a government arm, said that the Waqf Amendment Bill was not anti-Muslim and was brought only for transparency in the functioning of Wakf institutions. JD(U) Leader in Lok Sabha and Union Minister Lalan Singh said that from the words of many (Opposition) members, the Bill is anti-Muslim. How is this anti-Muslim? Opposition members talk about temples, but there is a difference between a temple and an institution. Lalan Singh said that mosques are being vandalized. JD(U) MP said that this amendment is being brought to make the waqf institution transparent.
