Bangladesh's new prime minister is a banker of the poor, a staunch critic of Sheikh Hasina.

Bangladesh: Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus will be sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh after the overthrow of the Sheikh Hasina government. Mohammed Yunus, known as the 'banker of the poor' in Bangladesh, is also considered a staunch critic of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After a violent uprising against the government, Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign as prime minister and flee the country. To resolve the sudden political crisis in neighboring India, President Muhammad Shahabuddin decided to form an interim government and entrusted Muhammad Yunus with the responsibility of leading it. He termed Sheikh Hasina's resignation as 'Bangladesh's second liberation day' in his remarks. Earlier he called Sheikh Hasina a 'bloodsucker'. Muhammad Yunus founded Grameen Bank in 1983. An economist by profession, Dr Mohammad Yunus is known as the banker of the poor in Bangladesh. She founded the Grameen Bank in 1983 to help Bangladesh's poor, especially women, through microcredit. He started providing loans to small entrepreneurs through this bank. Generally, it was very difficult for small entrepreneurs or common people to get credit during that time. Grameen Bank's success in lifting people out of poverty has led to this type of microcredit in other countries. Because of his efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. Since 2008, tensions with Sheikh Hasina have increased. Dr Muhammad Yunus's tension with Sheikh Hasina escalated when the Hasina government ordered an inquiry against him in 2008. Earlier, in 2007, Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced the formation of a new political party. At that time a military government was operating in Bangladesh. However, he did not. During the trial, Sheikh Hasina, head of the Gramin Bank, was accused of using force and other means to collect loan money from poor women from the villages. However, Muhammad Yunus has denied these allegations. Following this, Sheikh Hasina removed Muhammad Yunus from the post of Managing Director of Grameen Bank in 2011 for violating government pension rules. Apart from this, last year 2013, Muhammad Yunus was sued for taking money from the Nobel Prize, book royalty etc. without the permission of the government. However, he later had to face other charges related to his other companies. It also includes rural telecommunication company. It is the largest mobile company in Bangladesh which provides its services in rural areas. It is a subsidiary of the Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor. This time too he refused to accept these allegations. In early 2024, a special court in Bangladesh indicted Mohammad Yunus and 13 others in a $2 million embezzlement case. Yunus has pleaded not guilty and is currently out on bail. Yunus' supporters say he was targeted because of his sour relationship with Sheikh Hasina.
