Features of the tunnel include supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA), mechanical ventilation, fire brigade and communication systems. The tunnel will be a major link connecting Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh and Zanskar Valley in Ladakh. Road connectivity Notably, Leh has two axes, first Srinagar-Jojila-Kargil-Leh and second Manali-Atal tunnel-Churchu-Leh. These have high passes which are covered with snow for 4-5 months of the year. Once the Atal tunnel is completed, the route from Manali to Darcha will be operational throughout the year. On the auspicious day of Holi on March 25, 2024, BRO achieved connectivity on the 298 km long Nimu-Padum-Darcha road, which is the third and shortest axis to Leh. This road is one way only. The Shingun La tunnel project is at an altitude of 16,700 feet and is covered in snow due to which it has been cut off for about five months. To overcome the only remaining hurdle in achieving all-weather connectivity in Ladakh, BRO has started work on the Shingun La tunnel project. 4.1 km long tunnel The Shingun La tunnel project consists of a 4.1 km long tunnel and will be constructed at a height of 15,800 feet on the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road, making it the world's highest tunnel.
