A cargo ship on its way from Gujarat to Sri Lanka caught fire near Goa

A major accident occurred on Friday afternoon in a cargo ship near Goa. A terrible fire broke out on a cargo ship. The ship was on its way from Mundra, Gujarat to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. On receiving the information, the Indian Coast Guard immediately sent the vessel back. According to the Ministry of Shipping, one person died in this massive fire accident. When the deceased was identified, it was revealed that he was from the Philippines. A total of 21 people were on board. This includes Filipino, Montenegrin and Ukrainian citizens. Explaining the cause of the fire, the Coast Guard said that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the ship and the people on board came to know about it only when the fire spread. The ship was commissioned only in 2024. The cargo was transported under the name International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG). As the fire spread to 20 containers, crews on board tried to put out the fire but could not control it. Containers exploded as the fire spread rapidly. Of the 160 containers on board, 20 caught fire, the report said. Coast Guard Manoj Bhatia said three vessels have been dispatched to the spot to douse the fire. The Coast Guard also said that it has ordered a helicopter from Kochi to evacuate the people on board. The Maritime Operations Center (MOC) and Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) of the Indian Navy's Western Naval Command were also informed.
