Bangladesh Protest: Amid violent reservation protests in Bangladesh, local police said student protesters on Friday freed hundreds of prisoners from a jail in Narsingdi district of central Bangladesh and then set the jail building on fire. A police officer, on condition of anonymity, told news agency AFP that the prisoners escaped from the jail and the protesters set the jail on fire. He said that I do not know the number of prisoners, but it would be in hundreds.
Dhaka’s police force imposed a day-long ban on all types of public gatherings to control the violence. Police chief Habibur Rahman said that we have banned all rallies, processions and public gatherings in Dhaka today. He said that this step was necessary to ensure public safety.

Amidst the protests turning violent, internet was banned so that people could not participate in the rally. Even after this, the clash between the police and the protesters continued. A protester said that our protest will continue. He further said that they want the immediate resignation of Sheikh Hasina. The government is responsible for these killings.
Why are protests happening?
The quota movement in Bangladesh, which began on July 1 after the High Court restored the freedom fighters’ quota that reserved one-third of civil service posts for their descendants, has now turned into a violent movement. So far 64 people have died in the protests against the reservation. Thousands of students armed with sticks and stones have clashed with armed police in various cities of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, Chittagong, Rangpur and Cumilla.
