Trump and Biden head for election rematch as both clinch presidential nominations: Live updates

The former president won primaries in Georgia, Mississippi and Washington and the caucus in Hawaii on Tuesday night, taking him over the threshold of 1,215 delegates needed to secure the Republican party nomination.

Mr Biden also secured the Democratic nomination for president after winning the primaries in Mississippi, Washington and Georgia.

The president celebrated the victory in a video on X, describing the day as a “call to action”.

“Are you ready? Are you ready to defend democracy? Are you ready to protect our freedom? Are you ready to win this election?” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump took to Truth Social to call it “my great honor” to represent his party before lashing out at “the Worst, Most Incompetent, Corrupt, and Destructive President in the History of the United States”.

The defining day came hours after Special Counsel Robert Hur testified before the House Judiciary Committee after releasing the highly criticised report into Mr Biden’s handling of classified documents.
