The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the increasing suicide trend among children in the country. The Chief Justice of the country TY Chandrachud has expressed concern and said that child suicide is a very serious social problem. The Chief Justice has ordered to file an affidavit regarding the efforts being made by the Union Health Ministry to prevent suicide in the country. Advocate Gaurav Bansal has filed a petition in the Supreme Court. Citing an RTI reply by the Delhi Police on the rising suicide trend among children, it is alarming that more than 400 students under the age of 18 have committed suicide in Delhi from 2014 to 2018. Citing a WHO report, the petition alleged that the Delhi government had failed to provide a healthy social environment. The petitioner cited the WHO (World Health Organization) report Suicide Prevention – A Global Imperative. It is reported that young people are affected the most. Justice Chandrachud said it was a social issue. Let the Center and the authorities file counter affidavits. The Supreme Court has given 4 weeks time to the central government to respond to this petition. The petition has requested for effective implementation of public health programs to prevent and reduce suicide incidents. On August 2, 2019, the court issued notices to the Centre, States and Union Territories on the petition.
