Recently, a meeting of drug regulators was held, in which various states have been ordered to take strict action against pharmaceutical companies not implementing the provision of putting barcodes on products. To overcome the threat of counterfeit drugs currently spreading in the country, this authority has made it mandatory for pharma companies to put barcodes on their products, so that information such as manufacturing license, batch number, etc. can be easily available. The brands nominated by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) for the implementation of this provision include Dolo, Saridon Fabiflu, Ecosprin, Limcee, Sumo, Calpol, Corex Syrup, Unwanted 72 and Thyronorm. This provision has been implemented on the basis of annual turnover data of drugs collected by research institutes of the pharma sector by testing various brands of drugs.
Earlier, the Union Health Ministry had directed the Pharmaceutical Department to prepare a list of 300 medicines so that necessary amendments could be made in the rules applicable to these medicines.
