After Assam, Rahul Gandhi arrived in Manipur and visited the relief camps
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is on a tour of Assam and Manipur today. He started the tour from Silsar. Here he met the flood victims. Before reaching Manipur, there was heavy firing at Jiribam around 3.30 am. The firing lasted for about 3.30 hours. Around 3.30 pm some unidentified assailants started firing in Kularthal area of Jiribam and it continued till 7 pm. In response, the security forces also opened fire. Following the incident, a large number of security forces were deployed in the surrounding areas. Manipur has been in the grip of sporadic violence for almost a year now. The latest incident of violence took place on June 6. Rahul also raised the issue of violence in Manipur in the Lok Sabha. Targeting PM Modi, Rahul said PM Modi went everywhere but never to Manipur. Over 200 people were killed and thousands displaced following caste violence in Manipur on May 3 last year. Violence broke out when tribal solidarity marches were held in the hill districts of Manipur against the demand to include the Maithi community as a Scheduled Tribe (ST). Many efforts have been made to curb caste violence in Manipur, but the matter is still serious. Every day shooting incidents come to light here. Rahul Gandhi visited the relief camp in Silsar.
