Sensex crosses 80000 points record for first time; Nifty hits new highs
The Sensex touched a historic 80,000-point mark in early trade on Wednesday, while the Nifty also touched its lifetime high.Read in English:The National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty 50 was up 0.7% at 24,291.75 points, while the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex was up 0.72% at 80,013.77 points. This is the first time the 30-share Sensex has crossed 80,000 points.The Sensex crossed 79,000 on Thursday and is expected to cross 80,000 within the next week.The rise was driven by the country’s top private lender HDFC Bank, which hit a record high on hopes of increasing its weightage in a major global index. HDFC Bank led the Nifty gainers, up 3.5% at the open.Apart from HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance, IndusInd Bank, Bharti Airtel and Nestle were the top gainers. Tata Consultancy Services, Sun Pharma, Infosys and Tata Motors are lagging behind.In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong were trading in good condition, while the Shanghai market was lower. US markets ended higher on Tuesday.The benchmark BSE was down 34.74 points, or 0.04 percent, at 79,441.45 in a volatile trade on Tuesday.
