The main purpose of keeping Imran Khan in jail was to keep him away from Pakistan's politics.
United Nations Comes in Favour of Imran Khan News In Hindi: A United Nations (UN) group has demanded the immediate release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is in jail. He said that at least two cases brought against Imran Khan are politically motivated. The main motive behind keeping Imran Khan in jail was to keep him away from Pakistani politics. The UN working group gave its opinion on the detention of 71-year-old Imran Khan at its 99th session in Geneva from 18 to 27 March.
This UN group said that Imran Khan's arrest in the Toshakhana and Sifar cases was politically motivated, aimed at distancing him from Pakistan's politics. The group said that it was without any legal basis.
In the Toshakhana case, the former PM was accused of deliberately hiding the details of the government treasury during his tenure. Imran was also accused of earning money by selling expensive gifts from the government treasury. On August 5 last year, a lower court in Islamabad convicted Imran Khan in the first case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan and sentenced him to three years in jail. Later the same day, he was arrested by the Punjab Police. After being found guilty, the Election Commission disqualified Imran Khan for five years.
The UN group said, “There was no legal basis for Imran Khan's detention. Its sole purpose was to keep him away from politics.”
