At least 25 people were killed and 50 others injured when the Israeli army attacked camps for displaced Palestinians north of the city of Rafah on Friday, Gaza’s health ministry and emergency workers said.
According to Ahmad Radwan, a spokesman for the Civil Defence First Responders in Rafah, witnesses told rescue workers about shelling in two locations in the coastal area. At least 25 people were killed and 50 others injured in these attacks.
shelling on Palestinian camps
Israeli forces on Friday shelled camps for displaced Palestinians north of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, killing at least 25 people and wounding 50 others. It was the latest deadly attack in the tiny Palestinian territory where hundreds of thousands have fled fighting between Israel and Hamas.
The Health Ministry gave the number of people killed and injured in the attacks. The Israeli army said the matter was being reviewed, but there was no indication that the IDF had attacked. It also did not give details about any other attacks or what.
Israel has previously bombed sites around the humanitarian zone in Muwasi, a rural area on the Mediterranean coast that has been filled with sprawling camps in recent months. Witnesses whose relatives were killed in a bombing near a Red Cross field hospital told The Associated Press that Israeli forces opened fire in a second round, killing people who had come out of their tents.
No place is safe in Gaza
The United Nations says no place in Gaza is safe and humanitarian conditions are dire as people shelter in tents and cramped apartments without adequate food, water or medical supplies. Israel says it is targeting Hamas fighters and infrastructure and is trying to minimize civilian deaths. It blames militants for the vast majority of civilian casualties, saying it is because they operate among the population.
International criticism of Israel
As Israel’s war against Hamas enters its ninth month, international criticism is mounting over Israel’s campaign of systematic destruction in Gaza at a heavy cost to civilian lives. The UN’s top court has concluded that Gaza is at risk of genocide, a charge Israel strongly denies.
More than 37 thousand people died in Gaza
More than 37,100 people have been killed in Gaza in Israeli ground attacks and bombing, according to the Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count. Israel launched the war after Hamas’s October 7 attack in southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and kidnapping about 250.
