It is important to know what GI is? Our food contains carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the best source of energy for the body. It is very beneficial for the brain, muscles and other important organs. When food enters the digestive system, carbohydrates break down into sugar and the level of sugar in the blood increases. How fast these activities take place is measured through GI.
Food with a GIIf carbohydrate-rich food breaks down quickly and turns into glucose and gets absorbed in the blood quickly, then it is a high GI food. On the other hand, if the food breaks down slowly and gets converted into glucose and gets absorbed in the blood slowly, then it is a low GI food. According to Dr. Swapna Chaturvedi, dietician of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, to prevent and control lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes and BP etc. and to stay healthy, low GI food should be made a part of the diet. Instead of high GI food, eat low GI food, like take brown rice instead of white polished rice. Almonds, gram dal, curd, milk, cheese, orange, papaya, mango, watermelon, banana etc. are low GI foods.
Focus on eatingEating food with low GI is very important for weight loss. If the GI of any food is 55 or less, then that food is digested slowly and it keeps you feeling full for a longer time. If the GI of any food is 70 or more, then you feel hungry quickly and eat more food. Eat stuffed roti instead of stuffed parantha. Have italian/upma/poha instead of samosas/pakoras. Have jaggery/dry fruits instead of sweets. Coconut, lemonade instead of cold drinks. Have herbal tea or lemon tea instead of milk tea. Eat orange/seasonal fruit instead of juice.
