The number of Muslim MPs in the 18th Lok Sabha has decreased compared to last year. Only 23 Muslim candidates have won in the election results released on Tuesday. Among the winners, 18 minority candidates have been re-elected, including 7 Muslim MPs from the Congress and 5 from the TMC. A total of 90 Muslim candidates contested on the tickets of major parties in the Lok Sabha elections this time. Whereas in the 2014 elections, the same major parties had given tickets to Muslim candidates in 2016, and even then the winning numbers were only 23. Yusuf, who contested the election from Berhampur constituency on behalf of TMC, suffered a heavy defeat against senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary. In Hyderabad (Telangana), All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi has defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's Madhavi Lata Kombela by a margin of over 3 lakh votes. Talking about Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party's Igra Chowdhury from Kairana defeated BJP's Pradeep Kumar by around 70 thousand votes. Samajwadi Party's Afzal Ansari has defeated BJP's Paras Nath Roy by a margin of 1.25 lakh votes in Ghazipur constituency. Congress' Imran Masood has defeated BJP's Raghav Luckanpal by a margin of 64 thousand votes in Saharanpur constituency. Samajwadi Mohibullah won by a margin of 87 thousand votes from Rampur constituency and Zia ur Rehman won by a margin of one lakh twenty thousand votes from Sambal. Congress's Kunwar Danish Ali, after an early lead in Amroha constituency, lost to BJP's Kanwar Singh Tanwar by 28670 votes by evening, but it was a close contest between the two for a long time. Muslim candidates have won 6 seats in West Bengal. Isha Khan Choudhary of Congress defeated Srirupa Mitra Choudhary of BJP by a margin of around 1.25 lakh votes in Malta South constituency. All India Trinamool Congress's Khalilur Rahman won in Jangipur by a margin of over one lakh votes, TMC's Abu Tahir Khan in Murshidabad constituency, Sajda Ahmed by a margin of over 2 lakh votes, S.K. On the other hand, Congress's Tariq Anwar defeated JD(U)'s Dulal Chandra Goswami by around 50 thousand votes in Katihar constituency in Bihar. In Kishanganj, Congress's Mohammad Javed won by a margin of 60,000 votes against JD(U)'s Mujahid Alam. From Lakshadweep, NCP's Mohammad Faisal lost to Congress's Mohammad Hamdullah Saeed. Ragibul Hussain of Congress defeated AIUDF's Mohammad Baduruddin Ajmal by more than 10 lakh votes in Assam's Dhubri constituency. Meanwhile, in Ladakh, independent candidate Mohammad Haniba defeated Congress' Tsering Namgyal and BJP's Dashi Gyalson in this election. Interestingly, Abdul Rashid Shaikh, an independent candidate from Kashmir's Baramulla, National Conference President and Dr. Farooq Abdullah's son Umar Abdullah and J&K People's Conference's Sajjad Gani Lone suffered a crushing defeat. From Srinagar, Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi of National Conference registered a landslide victory, Mian Altaf Ahmed of National Conference from Anantnag defeated PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti by a margin of two lakh and eighty thousand votes.
