In 1962, Muzaffirgana Lok Sabha constituency was formed by amalgamating four assembly constituencies of Sultanpur district and one assembly constituency of Pratapgarh. Later in delimitation in 1972, two assembly constituencies of Rae Bareli district and three assembly constituencies of Sultanpur district were merged to form Amethi Lok Sabha constituency. The first election to this Lok Sabha constituency was held in 1977. At that time, Sanjay Gandhi contested the election on behalf of the Congress, but he lost the election to Rabindra Pratap Singh of the Janata Party. In the 1980 Lok Sabha election, he contested again and won and reached Parliament. However, after his death in 1981, a by-election was held and the seat was won by Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi won four consecutive elections from this constituency. Later in the 1991 posthumous by-election, Satish Sharma of the Congress became the MP from this constituency and he retained his seat in the 1996 elections. However, in the 1998 elections, Sanjay Singh wrested this seat from the Congress on a BJP ticket. Sonia Gandhi, who had contested from this constituency in the 1999 elections, vacated the constituency for Rahul Gandhi after winning the election from here. After that, Rahul Gandhi won the 2004, 2009 and 2014 elections from here. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani wrested this seat from Rahul Gandhi on behalf of BJP. Sarath Yadav also contested this Lok Sabha seat in 1981 on behalf of Lokthalam. Although he lost the election to Rajiv Gandhi.
