The Bharatiya Janata Party contested 31 assembly seats in Sikkim, but could not win even a single seat, which is a big setback for the party. In the last election in the state, 12 BJP candidates were elected. Let us tell you that the results of the Sikkim assembly elections were declared on Sunday which were a surprise for the BJP. In this election, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) retained power by winning 31 out of 32 seats.

In the Sikkim assembly elections, BJP got only 5.18 percent votes. While SKM got 58.38 percent votes. While Sikkim Democratic Front got 27.37 percent votes. Sikkim BJP President Dilli Ram Thapa lost to SKM candidate Kala Rai in Upper Burtuk assembly constituency. Current MLA and former minister Thapa lost by 2968 votes. Rai got 6723 votes while Thapa got 3755 votes.

KB Thapa of Sikkim Democratic Front got 1623 votes while BK Tamang (CAP-A) got 581 votes. BJP contested the assembly elections on 31 seats except Lachen Mangan seat and BJP candidates also lost their deposits on most of the seats. BJP decided to contest the election alone after breaking the alliance with Sikkim Krantikari Morcha led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. BJP decided to contest alone after seat allocation talks broke down due to SKM’s reluctance to meet the demand of respectable seats.

In the last election, the BJP had 12 MLAs in the Sikkim assembly. Out of which 10 were rebels from the opposition Sikkim Democratic Party. While the other two won the assembly by-elections held in October 2019 in alliance with the SKM. In that too, five of these 12 MLAs left the party. Out of which 3 joined the SKM and contested on SKM tickets. Of the remaining seven BJP MLAs, only two got tickets to contest the assembly elections.

Let us tell you here that till the 2019 assembly elections, the electoral track record of BJP in Sikkim can be said to be very poor. BJP entered the electoral politics of Sikkim in 1994. When they contested on 3 seats, the deposit was forfeited on all three seats.
