Maharashtra: Mumbai blasts convict Mohammad Ali Khan lodged in Kolhapur jail.
Prisoners have committed a major crime in Kolhapur Central Jail, Maharashtra. 1992-93 Mumbai blasts accused Mohammed Ali Khan jailed under MCOCA and beaten to death by five murder convicts. The incident reportedly took place when he went near the water tank built in the jail to take a bath. During the fight, five inmates in the tank allegedly hit Khan on the head with a manhole cover several times, resulting in his death. DIG Jails Swati Sathe told TV 9 Bharatvarsh that the incident took place between 7:30 and 8 am. Muhammad Ali Khan was confined in the 4th Brigade in Circle No. 2. Five other prisoners were lodged in the same camp on charges of MCOCA and murder. These 5 prisoners include Prateek alias Bilya Suresh Patil, Deepak Netaji Kot, Sandeep Shankar Chavan, Rituraj Vinayak Inamdar and Saurabh Vikas Sid. An argument took place inside the palace of Mohammed with one of these five prisoners. The matter was then settled, but after a while Muhammad Ali Khan came out of the bar and went to bathe in the well in the prison. At the same time, the other five inmates went to the pool to take a bath, and the altercation started again. The five accused started beating him and removed the cover of a nearby drain and hit Mohammed on the head. He got seriously injured and fell on the spot and died while being taken to the hospital. There is no information on whether there was a dispute so far and the investigation has no information about any previous dispute between the 5 accused and Khan. After the incident, an FIR of murder has been registered against five persons at the Juna Rajwada police station and an investigation is underway. After this incident, the prison administration is taking various measures for the safety of the inmates. An inmate was murdered last year as well, which is not the first such incident in the Kolhapur Central Jail. Earlier in February 2023, an inmate named Satpal Singh was killed by another inmate. Apart from this, in the last few months, many incidents of mobile phones and drug paraphernalia have been recovered from prisons.
