The Hanoi Department of Public Security on Friday verified the information about procedures for foreigners leaving Vietnam.
According to the department, some online groups spread the information that foreigners leaving Vietnam must declare their temporary absence, otherwise they would be fined up to tens of millions of Vietnamese dong.
The information is not true, the agency said, noting it has triggered public concern and affected businesses which act as guarantees for foreign laborers or employ foreigners as well as foreigners and lodging facilities that accommodate them.
The department cited current regulations stipulating that foreigners must declare temporary residence in case they move to a new place, temporarily live outside the address stated in the permanent residence card, or there is a change in information in their passports.
The regulations, however, do not mention temporary absence declaration for foreigners exiting Vietnam, it said, asking people to stop spreading such false information.
Those who share incorrect information on social networks will be strictly handled in accordance with the law, the department said.
