A tropical depression on the South China Sea has strengthened into a storm on Friday, the first one to make an appearance on the sea region this year.

Storm Maliksi was located on a sea region to the south of China’s Guangdong Province at around 1 p.m. Friday, with its maximum wind speed at 74 kph, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
The storm is moving north-northeast at 15-20 kph, and is expected to enter Guangdong Saturday morning.
Japanese and Hong Kong meteorological agencies also anticipated the storm to enter Guangdong Saturday morning, with a wind speed at around 65 kph. The storm would not affect mainland Vietnam.
The National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention on Thursday requested coastal localities from Quang Ninh to Kien Giang to monitor the situation and prepare for response measures.
The Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration said the storm season would come later this year for Vietnam, but storms would show up frequently in the September-November period. Up to 13 storms and tropical depressions may appear this year over the South China Sea, known as the East Sea in Vietnam, with 5-7 of them affecting mainland Vietnam.
