Cash and jewelery seized during elections increased by 182 per cent
While the Lok Sabha elections are going on across the country, the last phase of voting is yet to take place. Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department has submitted a report. According to the records of the Income Tax Department, Rs.1100 crore worth of cash and jewelery have been confiscated in an unprecedented manner during the current Lok Sabha elections. Also, the Income Tax Department said that Rs.390 crore was seized during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Compared to this, there were 182% more seizures this time. The Income Tax department was closely monitoring the first phase of elections in the country on April 19, before the Model Code of Conduct came into effect on March 16. From that day on, Income Tax officials seized cash and jewellery. Also, after the Election Conduct Rules came into force, the Income Tax Department is engaged in intensive monitoring. As a result, the income tax department was monitoring the movement of goods including money, liquor, free goods, drugs and jewellery. More Seizures in Delhi-Karnataka According to sources, the largest amount of cash was seized in Delhi and Karnataka. Cash and jewelery worth over Rs 200 crore were seized in both these states. Also, 150 crore rupees were seized in Tamil Nadu for the second time. Over Rs 100 crore in cash and jewelery were seized in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha. If cash above Rs 50,000 or goods worth more than Rs 10,000 are found being carried without a valid bill, the goods will be confiscated. However, if the seized cash exceeds Rs 10 lakh, it is sent to the Income Tax Department for further investigation. Counting of votes in the country took place on June 4, with the first phase of voting on April 19, followed by the second phase on April 26, the third phase on May 7, and the fourth phase on the 13th.
