Why did the opposition party stay away from voting in Nepal?

Kathmandu. Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' on Monday won the confidence vote in Parliament, his fourth floor test within 18 months of taking office. During this, the main opposition party Nepali Congress raised slogans and abstained from voting. Prachanda (69), leader of Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), the third largest party in Nepal's House of Representatives (HoR), got 157 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives. A total of 158 MPs took part in the voting.
The main opposition party Nepali Congress boycotted the voting process and raised slogans against Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane. Lamichhane is accused of misuse of cooperative funds. Due to this sloganeering by the opposition party, the voting process was delayed.
One member of the House of Representatives remained neutral during the voting. Speaker of the House Raj Ghimire announced that Prachanda has won the trust vote with the majority in Parliament. This show of strength came days after the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), one of the coalition partners, withdrew its support to the coalition government last week.
The government needed at least 138 votes to win the trust vote. Earlier, voting was delayed due to obstruction by Nepali Congress. Nepali Congress demanded the formation of a parliamentary inquiry committee to investigate Lamichhane's alleged involvement in the scam.
This is the fourth time that the vote of confidence has been held in Parliament since Prachanda took over as Prime Minister in December 2022. According to constitutional provisions, the Prime Minister has to seek a vote of confidence in case any ally party withdraws support from the ruling coalition. Earlier, Prachanda had won the trust vote for the third consecutive time on March 13.
