Chinese ‘spy’ ship again reaches Maldives, President Muizzu kept the reason secret: Report

Chinese spy ship: China’s 4,500-tonne high-tech spy ship has returned to Maldivian waters. Two months later, the archipelago is back after spending a week at various ports in the country. Jiang Yang Hong 03 arrived at Thilapushi Industrial Island Port on Thursday morning. India and America have expressed concern about this Chinese spy ship.

The Maldivian government did not disclose the reason for the return of the Chinese spy ship but confirmed that the government had given permission for the ship to dock. Won the general elections by securing 66 seats out of the 93-member People’s Majlis. President Muizzu came to power last year on the promise of ‘India Out’ and has further strengthened his position with a landslide victory in the April 21 parliamentary elections.

Why did China’s ‘spy’ ship return?

Regarding the Chinese spy ship, Maldives has said that the ship has now returned after crossing the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Jiang Yang Hong has been active in or around the Maldives area since 03 January. The ship had earlier docked at Thilaphushi port, about 7.5 km west of Male, on February 23. The high-tech ship reached Maldivian waters on February 22 after spending almost a month near the border of Maldives’ EEZ. After about 6 days, the ship returned to the EZ border.

Maldives claims spy ship will not do any research!

In February, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry said that the Jiang Yang Hong 3 had asked for a port call for ‘rotation and replenishment of its personnel’, following a diplomatic request by the Chinese government to the Maldivian government. The Foreign Ministry said on January 23, “The ship will not conduct any research in Maldivian waters.” The Maldives’ proximity to India, barely 70 nautical miles from Minicoi Island in Lakshadweep and 300 nautical miles from the west coast of the mainland, and its location at the center of commercial sea routes through the Indian Ocean region make it important.

What can a Chinese spy ship do?

Meanwhile, the 100-meter-long ship was added to China’s State Oceanic Administration in 2016, according to a report in February about the ship Jiang Yang Hong 03. It is currently the only 4,500-ton ship in China. Since 2019, China has also been using the ship to survey ‘distant waters’ and ‘deep seas’ in its Pilot Ocean Laboratory. It added that the ship can also be used for mineralogy, microbial genetic studies, underwater mineral exploration and studies on underwater life and environment. It has data plumes that can measure ocean currents, waves and important environmental information. The report said that these aircraft will be able to provide real-time satellite information to the Chinese government. According to China, the ship has an endurance of 15,000 nautical miles. That means it can travel 15,000 nautical miles non-stop without any help for its work.
