First Sikh court opened in Britain, know on which issues will be heard?
There is good news for the people of the Sikh community trapped in family and civil disputes in Britain. A new court has been launched in London by British Sikh lawyers. The people of the Sikh community united and established the new court as a dispute resolution forum.
According to a news report, the Sikh Court was inaugurated with religious chants at a ceremony at the Old Hall of Lincoln’s Inn in London. Lawyer Baldeep Singh, one of the founders of the court, says it aims to deal with conflicts and disputes. Time to help Sikh families.
It is being told that the new court will be run privately and will have about 30 magistrates and 15 judges. The special thing is that most of them will be women. The function of the magistrate in the court will be to mediate between the parties to reach an agreement.
After discussions with Sikh organisations, it has been decided that the court will hear cases like domestic violence, gambling and drug addiction. If mediation is unsuccessful in these cases, the case may be brought before a court judge. After this, a legal decision will be taken under the Arbitration Act.
Baldeep Singh said that the issues which we cannot settle will be sent to the appropriate place. Under new court rules, both sides of the case must agree to participate. He further said that the purpose of this court is not to usurp and harass the English courts.
