Heat is increasing in Bengal, mercury near 42 degrees

Some districts of South Bengal are battling heat wave-like conditions and the maximum temperature during the day reached 42.5 degrees Celsius in Panagarh in West Burdwan district, the highest recorded in the state on Wednesday. Day temperatures were recorded above 40 degrees Celsius in many districts including Dum Dum, Midnapore, Bankura, Salt Lake, Canning, Kalikunda, Burdwan, Asansol, Purulia, Jhargram and Balurghat.

On Wednesday, the day temperature in Kolkata city remained around 39.4 degrees Celsius for the second consecutive day, which was at least 3.8 degrees above normal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that more districts of South Bengal are likely to be affected by heat wave in the next two to three days. “Summer vacations were scheduled to start from May 5, but this decision has been taken earlier in view of the heat wave conditions,” an official said.
