IWF World Cup: American weightlifter Reeves wins three gold medals
Phuket, April 8 (HS). United States’ Olivia Reeves won three gold medals in the women’s 71kg category at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup here on Sunday.
Reeves was successful on all six of her attempts, lifting a total of 268 kg (118 kg in the snatch and 150 kg in the clean and jerk), placing behind China’s Liao Guifang and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s Song Kuk Hyang.
Liao and Song, the respective world record holders in the clean and jerk, tried to outdo each other in the snatch by attempting 120 kg after their initial success at 115 kg, but neither was successful.
Liao lifted 149 kg but failed on her third attempt of 154 kg in the clean and jerk in her final attempt to win the competition. The Chinese lifters won a bronze medal in the snatch, and a silver medal in the clean and jerk.
The IWF World Cup in Phuket runs until April 11 and will serve as a qualifying event for Paris 2024.
