India’s vigorous diplomacy in UN, ‘friendship’ with Palestine on one side and Israel on the other side remains intact – News India Live
UNHRC proposal: India has shown amazing diplomacy in the United Nations. While on one hand India supported Palestine, on the other hand it has also maintained friendship with Israel. The UNHRC passed a resolution calling for an immediate halt to Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and a halt to arms supplies to Israel, but India abstained.
India stayed away from this proposal
The council expressed concern over the resolution presented on Friday and condemned human rights violations by Israeli forces in Gaza. In the 47-member Council, 28 countries voted in support of the resolution, while six countries voted against the resolution, while 13 member states abstained. India along with France, Japan, Romania and others abstained from the proposal. Major countries opposing the proposal included the US, Germany, Bulgaria and Argentina. Other countries voting in favor of the ceasefire included Russia, China, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kuwait, Maldives, Qatar, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. Israel’s ambassador also boycotted the session in protest against the proposal.
India is in favor of an independent Palestine state
At the Human Rights Council, India voted in favor of another resolution related to the establishment of an independent state for the Palestinians and their right to self-determination. In this proposal, 42 member countries including India voted in support while America and Paraguay voted against it. Albania, Argentina and Cameroon abstained from voting. Notably, India has a long-standing policy of supporting the creation of an independent Palestinian state, while the Modi government is strengthening ties with Israel and maintaining the country’s policy on Palestine.
