Bernie Sanders Slams State Department Over Israel-Gaza Stance, Calls It A ‘Mockery of US Law’

What Happened: Sanders took to social media platform X to express his disapproval of the State Department’s position on Israel’s conduct in Gaza. He labeled the stance “absurd” and a “mockery of U.S. law and assurances provided to Congress.”

The Senator’s tweet was accompanied by a letter addressing the State Department’s recent statement. The letter, dated Mar. 25, highlighted the State Department’s assertion that Israel is in compliance with U.S. law, international humanitarian law, and the Biden Administration’s recent National Security Memorandum.

Sanders, however, contested this position, citing the significant human toll of the conflict in Gaza. He pointed out that thousands of Palestinian children are at risk of starvation due to the lack of sufficient humanitarian aid, a situation he attributed to Israel’s actions.

Why It Matters: Sanders’ criticism comes in the wake of a UN Security Council resolution for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, which the U.S. abstained from.

The resolution marked a significant shift in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which has led to a looming famine in northern Gaza, as warned by the UN food agency.

Former President Donald Trump has also urged Israel to end its offensive in Gaza, warning of the country’s diminishing international support.
