Citroen eC3 Receives 0 Star Safety Rating – Faces Criticism
The Citroen eC3, launched in India in February 2023 as an eco-friendly and innovative vehicle, has faced criticism following its recent crash test outcomes.
Global NCAP, a leading safety and crash test organization, conducted these tests and revealed concerning results about the car’s safety measures.
Citroen eC3’s Disappointing Safety Ratings
Results from Global NCAP showed that the Citroen eC3 received a 0-star safety rating for adult passengers and a 1-star rating for child passengers. The vehicle comes equipped with dual front airbags, seat belt reminders, and belt load limiters.
However, it lacks essential safety features like Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), ISOFIX for child seats, Side Airbags, and Knee Airbags. This absence significantly affected its performance in the crash tests.
During the tests, the eC3’s body shell integrity was found to be stable in frontal impacts. Yet, the lack of side head protection made it impossible to conduct side pole impact testing.
Adults’ safety was compromised due to weak chest protection for the driver and poor chest protection for the passenger. Further concerns were raised by inadequate knee protection for the driver and unstable footwell areas.
For child safety, the seat designed for a 3-year-old, installed facing forward, did not adequately prevent excessive forward movement and head contact, despite satisfactory side impact protection. The absence of three-point seat belts in all positions and lack of standard Isofix positions were also noted as deficiencies.
Global Concern and Manufacturer’s Response
Global NCAP has voiced its concerns over these results, stressing the need for comprehensive safety features in vehicles, especially in emerging markets like India. Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP, criticized Stellantis for the poor results, indicating a significant step back in safety standards.
Stellantis responded to the crash test outcomes by affirming its compliance with current local market regulations. The manufacturer also committed to enhancing safety by standardizing six airbags and additional safety features across its products in India during the second half of the year.
The Citroen eC3’s recent crash test results have sparked a dialogue on vehicle safety standards, urging manufacturers to prioritize and upgrade safety features. As vehicles continue to evolve, ensuring the safety of all occupants remains a critical concern that demands urgent attention and action from manufacturers worldwide.
